A Young Man's Irresponsible Drinking Results In A DUI And Time In The Local Jail
Richard had an exceedingly difficult time maintaining a job. Indeed, because of his slothfulness and lack of motivation, he was out of a job far more frequently than he was employed. And when he did land a job, he had an exceedingly difficult time getting to work when his shift started, he typically got less than passing performance appraisals, and he called off sick so many times that he usually got fired a week or two after he started working.
Obviously, one of the consequences of Richard's poor work record was the fact that he was without much money on a day-to-day basis. In spite of Richard's less than positive work track record and financial laxity, however, somehow, someway he made it his business to drink in a hazardous manner on a day-to-day basis.
So it came as no big surprise when Richard received a third DWI. When he went to court, the judge clearly stated to Richard that his alcohol-related actions was awful and, consequently, he was going to sentence Richard to serve five months locked up in jail.
During his time in the municipal jail, Richard was required to learn more about alcohol facts such as alcohol related effects and alcohol deaths, about the damaging outcomes of excessive drinking, and he was required to get alcohol counseling. The judge accentuated the fact that unless Richard receives professional alcohol treatment and discovers how to live a life of abstinence, he will probably be spending a considerable amount of time in jail.
Richard stated that he understood what the magistrate was declaring but he still felt that placement in the city jail was not the right punishment. The magistrate disagreed and said that it was his obligation to keep alcohol dependent individuals off the streets who drink and drive and who receive one or more DWIs. To support this perspective, the judge articulated some venerable, highly researched alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse facts and statistics that pointed to some of the demoralizing results that are related to excessive drinking such as alcohol related deaths.
Even though Richard knew that he drank in a hazardous manner, he never felt that he was an alcohol addicted individual. So it was a rude awakening when Richard began suffering from chronic alcoholism signs and symptoms and alcohol withdrawal symptoms just about two hours after going to jail.
To monitor his symptoms of alcohol withdrawal in a safe and sound manner, Richard was taken to a drug and alcohol treatment facility for alcohol detoxification and then returned to the city jail. While in jail Richard received alcohol rehab but since he got this treatment as something that was mandated for him, he neglected to take ownership of his excessive and abusive drinking.
When his time in the county jail was completed, the judge without hesitation told Richard that he would be under rigorous scrutiny and would be required to take periodic random breath alcohol tests. After hearing how Richard neglected to take ownership of his drinking problem and how he unenthusiastically followed the treatment regimen while behind bars, the magistrate knew that it was essentially a matter of time before he would be seeing Richard once again in court about his abusive drinking behavior.
As the magistrate thought about Richard's situation, he couldn't help but think about how some individuals never "connect the dots" and learn how to live in an accountable and productive manner.
